What is ATSC 3.0 or NextGen TV?

First of all; it is FREE Over-The-Air (OTA) digital TV. Yes, FREE! It is still puzzling to me that even many of my friends outside of the industry are not aware of free over the air TV.

ATSC 3.0 is the latest version of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard. It supports several advancements including mobile viewing, Ultra High Definition (UHD), high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR), and wide color gamut (WCG) picture quality, as well as immersive audio.

This NextGenTV technology is totally based on the Internet Protocol (IP). The following intro video produced by ATSC will highlight some of the benefits. 


With ATSC 3.0, broadcasters will be able to deliver new services and media enhancements such as:
  • Interactivity
  • Advanced service guides
  • Emergency communications support
  • Mobility
  • Addressable content for dynamic targeted advertisements
  • Superior video and audio quality
  • Efficient delivery of large amounts of data, and 
  • Personalization/localization.
